A 60-year-old man has died after falling through the ice of Onwatin Lake in Hanmer this morning.

Greater Sudbury Police Service said first responders were dispatched to the lake, which is just south of Capreol, at around 10:45 a.m. today, Dec. 31.

“Witnesses observed the male go through the ice due to the unsafe ice conditions and immediately attempted to provide assistance resulting in 911 being activated,” GSPS said in a news release.

GSPS said a “co-ordinated response” involving police, Greater Sudbury Fire Services and Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services was staged in an attempt to rescue the man, who was a resident of Onwatin Lake Road, police said.

The unconscious man was pulled from the lake as a result of those efforts, however he couldn’t be saved, officials said.

“Immediate lifesaving efforts were initiated, however the individual succumbed to the immersion  in the cold water,” GSPS said.

The investigation is continuing through the Coroner’s Office.

“Our sincerest condolences are shared to the family and friends involved in this tragic incident,”GSPS said. “Out of respect for the family, we will not be releasing the name of the individual involved.”

The death is a “stark reminder,” GSPS said, of the need to “prioritize safety” given the ongoing mild weather conditions.

“Recent unseasonal winter weather conditions have led to unstable ice on area lakes and waterways,” GSPS said. “Please refrain from venturing onto these frozen surfaces as they pose significant risks. Your safety is our top priority. Stay informed, stay cautious and help us ensure a secure winter for all residents of Greater Sudbury.”
