A 32-year-old man was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon after brandishing a knife at at a Greater Sudbury Police officer working at the downtown police station's information desk, in the main lobby.

The incident occurred Aug. 3, just after 1 p.m. The officer was able to convince the suspect, who appeared to be in crisis, to sit on the ground. The knife was then taken away from him.

The incident was witnessed by several members of the public who were at the station.

“I think it's just one of those situations where the officer was a champion,” said Staff Sgt. Marc Brunette.

“They were able to negotiate a peaceful resolution without injury to the public, without injury to the officer, but also, without injury to this person that's in crisis. It's one of those good news stories in an unfortunate circumstance.”
