A 58-year-old man is in police custody today after he allegedly brandished a fake gun in downtown Sudbury.

Police said the day began with the man, who police have not named, approaching another man in the Tim Hortons on Cedar Street downtown. The 58-year-old flashed what appeared to be a gun at the man and threatened him, before leaving the scene on foot.

A short time later, the 58-year-old was spotted at the corner of Larch and Durham streets, pointing what appeared to be a gun at passing cars. Police must have received calls from the public because it didn’t take long for officers to arrive on the scene and arrest the man.

He was taken into custody without incident, GSPS said.

A replica gun was found in his possession, police report, and he has been charged with one count each of weapons dangerous, use of an imitation firearm to commit an offence and uttering threats.

“There is no concern for public safety and we would like to thank all of the individuals who assisted by providing information to officers and our communications centre,” police said. “This is a reminder that individuals who display replica firearms in order to intimidate or commit a crime will be charged accordingly under the Criminal Code of Canada.”
