Police chief becoming safety commissioner

Greater Sudbury Police Chief Ian Davidson has announced he will be retiring from the police service in May 2009.

Reporting directly to the Deputy Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, this position will assume overall accountability for public safety strategies, emergency preparedness, fire protection services, policing support, security services, Centre of Forensic Science and the Ontario Police College.

Ian Davidson Davidson joined the Ottawa Police Service in 1978. In 1999, he and his family returned to their hometown of Sudbury, where he became the police superintendent. In 2002, he was appointed police chief.

"Chief Davidson has been a strong and very active community leader. The chief has truly made a difference in public safety in our community and in Ontario," said Dr. Rayudu Koka, chair of the Greater Sudbury Police Service.
