Police honour three local heroes

A senior, who chased down a purse snatcher, and a conscientious citizen who rushed to the aid of police officers during a struggle were honoured by the Greater Sudbury Police Services Board Monday evening.

A senior, who chased down a purse snatcher, and a conscientious citizen who rushed to the aid of police officers during a struggle were honoured by the Greater Sudbury Police Services Board Monday evening.

The board?s 19th Annual Awards Presentations were held at the Hellenic Centre with about 100 officers and members of the public attending.

Besides honouring citizens, the awards presentation recognized officers and civilian members who have completed 20, 25 and 30 years of service.

Citizens Romeo Beaulieu and Peter Fortin were honoured for performing outstanding deeds in assisting the police service.

Robert Chartrand was honoured posthumously. He was recognized for helping establish the snowmobile patrol STOP program, where members of the community patrol trails trying to make them safer. He was killed in a motorcycle accident several weeks ago.

Fortin rushed to assist an officer attempting to arrest a suspect during a struggle in a hotel parking lot.

Beaulieu, 70, was recognized for chasing down a young thug who roughed up an elderly woman and stole her purse.

Police Chief Ian Davidson praised members of the public who go out of their way to assist police when trouble arises.

Police personnel who received exemplary service bars for 30 years of service included Staff Sgt. David Linney, Sgt. David Healey and civilian employees Lillian Howard, Jan Moore and Shelby Pen.

Those who received service bars for 25 years of service included Marie Baker, Anna Cerilli and Nadine Lair.

Medals for 20 years of service were handed out to Sgt. Wayne Foster, Sgt. Joanne Pendrak, Const. Doug Boyd and civilian employee Elizabeth Mazza.
