Police ID man who left 'suspicious' toolbox at city hall

No malicious intent, man will not be charged

Greater Sudbury Police said Thursday they have identified a 24-year-old man who left a toolbox outside at Tom Davies Square this week, prompting an evacuation Wednesday.

The man, who has no fixed address, left the toolbox on the second floor outdoor concourse between Tom Davies Square and 199 Larch St.

“While the discovery of the toolbox gave rise to suspicion regarding its contents, Greater Sudbury Police determined that the item was discarded as it was of no further use to the individual,” police said in a news release. “Police can confirm that there was no criminal or malicious intent behind the disposal of the toolbox.”

The investigation into the matter is closed, police added, thanking the public for their co-operation.

The discovery of the toolbox, which was left overnight before being discovered Wednesday, led to the evacuation of the daycare and staff at Tom Davies.

The OPP bomb disposal robot and unit was called in to assist police, who were eventually able to determine the toolbox was empty.
