Greater Sudbury Police are asking citizens to take steps to prevent the theft of items from their vehicles.

Since Nov. 1, there have been approximately 90 incidents of thefts of items such as hands-free attachments for cell phones, wallets, MP3 players and satellite radio systems from vehicles in the Sudbury area.

Most thefts occur during evenings and overnight. In the majority of complaints, vehicles are in the owner's driveway and have been left unlocked.

Preventative tips:

  • Keep vehicle doors locked at all times.
  • If you have motion lights set up at home, aim them so that they turn on when there is movement around your car or truck in the driveway.
  • If you have a garage, park inside and also lock the doors.
  • When possible, do not leave any valuables inside the vehicle, even if it is locked.
  • If valuables need to be left inside the vehicle, they should be placed in the trunk or at least concealed somehow – this is especially important at this time of year as people are out shopping for the holidays and they may take purchases to their vehicles then return to the mall.
  • Any suspicious activity should be reported to police as soon as possible.
