Greater Sudbury Police has once again launched its festive Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) season as officers from the Traffic Management Unit and uniform branch will be on the streets across Greater Sudbury looking for drivers who insist on getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.

Random spot checks will begin throughout the city commencing the evening of Friday, Nov. 17 and carry through to New Year's. Officers will be targeting areas of high incidents of impaired driving checking drivers to ensure roads within our community are safe through the holiday season.

Officers will once again enforce a zero tolerance policy for individuals who drink and drive.

Drivers who are stopped and have consumed more than the legal limit will  automatically lose their driver's license for 90 days. The vehicle will also be towed and those charged will have to attend court and upon conviction will be subject to a one-year license suspension, increased insurance premiums and be required to install an ignition interlock system in their vehicles at their own expense.

This doesn't include legal expenses.

The traffic management unit will also continue its fall enforcement initiative over the next two months. Last week officers concentrated their efforts on improper turns and failing to signal intention of turns and lane changes.

Last week, 70 people were charged with improper turns and one person was charged with failing to signal intention of turn. Another 60 Highway Traffic Act charges were laid.

The week traffic officers will concentrate their efforts on individuals who insist in exceeding maximum speed limits.

Officers will target Municipal Road 55, Municipal Road 80, Municipal Road 35 and Falconbridge Road in Garson.

Drivers are urged to follow posted maximum speed signs and reduce speeds if poor road conditions exist due to poor weather.
