Greater Sudbury police stopped a total of 960 vehicles at RIDE checkpoints on Saturday, Nov. 28 and Sunday, Nov. 29.

Of those 960 drivers, a total of 14 were suspected of driving under the influence and were required to give breath samples.

Two drivers received three-day suspensions, one driver was charged with impaired driving and had his license suspended for 90 days, a novice driver had his licence suspended for 12 hours for having blood alcohol above zero, and one driver was charged for driving while suspended.

Twelve highway traffic act charges were laid through the RIDE checkpoint, including one for allowing an unlicenced driver operate a motor vehicle.

The RIDE checks on Saturday and Sunday were sponsored by Sudbury Focus Group, as part of the kick-off of the annual Red Ribbon Campaign by Action Sudbury.

Greater Sudbury police remind drivers that Operation Rednose is now in operation, which provides rides home for those too impaired to drive. There are also alternatives to driving such as a taxi, or arranging a ride.
