Chief of Police Ian Davidson and members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service are pleased to announce that Staff Sergeant Sheilah Weber has been awarded the inaugural Gimborn Scholarship, co-sponsored by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) and the International Police Association, Ontario Region (IPA).   She was selected from applicants from across Ontario.

The Scholarship was introduced in March 2008 as a result of a partnership between the OACP and the IPA.  It provides an opportunity for a police officer from Ontario to travel to the IPA’s Conference Centre at Gimborn near Cologne, Germany, and participate in one of their specialized policing seminars. This provides an excellent learning opportunity and allows officers to network with colleagues from around the world on a variety of public safety issues including international perspectives on organized crime, illegal drugs, Cyber crime and terrorism.

“I am very pleased that Staff Sergeant Weber has been chosen to receive this scholarship,” said Chief Davidson, the OACP’s President. “The OACP and IPA share a strong commitment to supporting our officers in their career development. Having an opportunity to travel to Germany and work with police officers from around the world will help this outstanding officer develop her talents and skills to serve the people of our community.”

Serving in her 21st year of policing, Staff Sergeant Weber is currently assigned to the Greater Sudbury Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Branch.  Having started her career in Elliot Lake and joining Sudbury in 1997, Staff Sergeant Weber has acquired a broad and diversified skill set having served in most areas in the profession.

She was assigned as this Police Service’s first High Risk, Long-Term and Dangerous Offender officer.  This responsibility equipped her to assume the role of Sergeant in charge of the Intelligence Branch.
Staff Sergeant Weber is a highly committed and diligent member of the Greater Sudbury Police Service and is respected for her ability to tackle a broad range of assignments, including major investigations, a press release stated. She is a recognized leader, coach, and mentor by both peers and supervisors.

Through her present course of study at Athabasca University, she is focusing on the evolution of policing and, more specifically, the influence of globalization.

Staff Sergeant Weber received her scholarship at the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police’s 57th Annual General Conference held June 16-18 in Niagara Falls.

Staff Sergeant Weber stated “I am truly humbled and honoured to have been selected for such a prestigious award.  I can’t wait to take advantage of this opportunity and I wish to express my appreciation to our police service, Chief Davidson, the President of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Police Association.”
