Cambrian Golden Shield men's basketball team were defeated by the Laurier Golden Hawks Friday afternoon 72-60 in an exhibition match-up on Cambrian's home gym.
The first half saw the Golden Hawks with a 15 point lead going into half-time.
"We only really played 20 minutes of basketball," said the Golden Shield's head coach Brad Hann.
"We didn't compete as hard as we should of in the first half," he said, adding that he sat down with the guys at the half-time and talked about really making a game out of it and putting their best effort forward.
"I thought we came out and played almost as hard as we possibly could in the second half."
Brady Bolan was the team's top scorer with 22 points.
Hann noted that Joey Pelletier, who made a lot of hustle plays, and Theo Plumstead, who played some tough defence, gave them a boost on the floor.
The head coach said that playing 20 minutes of basketball isn't going to win any game.
"We've got to compete. Every minute, every second," he said. "That's the biggest lesson. Compete for 40 minutes and put yourself in a position to win a basketball game."
Hann said that playing university-level basketball teams is a big challenge for the team, and prepares them for the season.
Cambrian will play another exhibition round on Oct. 24 against Sault College followed by their alumni game on Oct. 25 at 7 .pm.
The Golden Shield's first regular season game will take place on Oct. 31 against La Cite at 7 p.m.
