Lady Vees, Voyageurs set to battle Trent Excalibur Saturday

The Laurentian Lady Vees soccer team will look to continue their successful start to the 2009 season as they take on the Trent Excalibur Sept. 12.

The Laurentian Lady Vees soccer team will look to continue their successful start to the 2009 season as they take on the Trent Excalibur Sept. 12. This game — which will be the team's fourth in eight days — takes place on the Laurentian soccer field at 12 p.m.

Last season, the Lady Vees swept the season series against Trent (0-1-1), posting a 4-0 win on the road and a 3-1 victory at home. A year ago the Excalibur posted a 0-13-1 record, finishing last in the OUA East and missing playoffs.

"We need to not concern ourselves with what to expect from Trent,” said head coach Rob Gallo. “We need to continue to move forward. It is our last home game prior to our first road trip to Kingston and we face a must-win situation.

“We need to continue our evolution as a team. We have certain parts working well and other parts slightly misfiring so we will be looking for a good team game from front to back and eliminating the small mistakes. Our possession and passing game needs to be sharper. Once we get all cylinders firing at the same time we will be a less predictable team.”

The Laurentian Voyageurs soccer team will take the pitch following the ladies' game. The Voyageurs will look to extend their point streak to three games against the Excalibur. Game time is 2:15 p.m.

Trent (0-1-1), who finished the 2008 season in fourth place with a (5-5-4) record, lost to Ryerson in the Quarter Finals by a score of 3-2.

Last season saw Trent (0-1-1) get the better half of Laurentian, with a 2-2 draw on the Excalibur pitch and a 1-0 upset on Laurentian's home field.

“We are looking to continue our home stand with a win,” said head coach Carlo Castrechino. “Being undefeated heading into our first road trip will be a huge confidence boost for us. Trent will be a tough opponent for us as they always work hard and have had good success against us the past few years. We want to continue our strong defensive play and capitalize more frequently on our goal scoring opportunities.”
