Hey sports fans, it's time for a quick look into the movers
and shakers of our local teams, athletes and leagues.
I am going to start with some Great North Midget League
(GNML) stuff.
Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves forward Mathieu Lecours has
kept up his goal-per-game pace thanks to a couple of solid
performances this past weekend. He popped a goal in a 5-1 win
over Kapuskasing and then went out-of-control during a 21-1
romp over Timmins with two goals and seven points. Lecours now
has 25 goals and 50 points in 24 games. North Bay's Tyler
Hummel, with 27 goals in 26 games, is the only other player
clipping at a goal-per-game pace.
Now, let's dip into the NOJHL, and the Kal Tire Sudbury
Junior Wolves.
I've noticed a big trend in the rise of play of a few
players since Darryl Moxam came back as head coach four games
ago.
J.F. Houle has seven goals and 13 points in the four games.
Scott Restoule has seven goals and 12 points in the same span.
Brenden Biedermann has three goals and nine points. Jacob
Johnston recorded two goals and six points, and is now second
overall in the NOJHL for defenceman scoring with 30 points.
(Val Caron's Andre Gauvin, who plays for Blind River, leads
with 34 points.)
Let's change gears to the high school loop, and senior
girls' Division II hockey.
There's a big race heating up in the league's overall
scoring standings, and three players have emerged as the front
runners.
Confederation's Jessica Schroeder is in first with 28 goals
and 37 points in her first eight games.
Champlain's Julie Hebert is a whisker away with 27 goals and
36 points in her first nine games.
L'Horizon's Micheline Frappier rounds out the big three with
24 goals and 34 points in her first 10 games.
Needless to say, the scoring race is going to be interesting
and will likely be decided in the final games of the regular
season.
L'Horizon is getting the most out of their scoring ace as
the team sits first overall in the Division II standings with a
record of 9-1-0.
Now, let's take a look at the national scene.
My hat goes off to Sudbury's Tessa Bonhomme and Rebecca
Johnston.
The two superb athletes helped Canada's Under-22 women's hockey team take gold at the recent Air Canada Cup in Germany. Canada dumped Germany 6-1 in the final. Johnston scored a goal in the game. Bonhomme was named to the tournament's all-star squad.
