Some wins, some losses for midget teams

Here's a wrap up of the three local hockey teams in the Great North Midget League (GNML), scores, statistics and future games.

Sudbury Nickel Capitals

The Capitals won both their games last weekend, and have won four straight overall.

The Capitals blasted Kapuskasing 8-2 on Oct. 1, and then dismantled North Bay 6-3 on Oct. 2. With the recent success, the Capitals now sit first
overall in the GNML with a record of 8-1.

Here's a look at the Capitals top-three scorers: Vern Cooper and Joey Derochie have 11 goals and 19 points in 11 games each. Kyle Tarini has seven goals and 11 points in seven games.

Goalie report: Andre Frappier has played four games, allowing 10 goals and sports a 2.50 goals-against-average (GAA). Joey Delwo has also played four games, allowing 16 goals and has a 3.20 GAA.

The Capitals were back in action this weekend when they travelled to Sault Ste. Marie for a pair of road games against the North Stars on Oct. 8 and 9. The two games were a battle for first overall as both teams have won eight games and sit atop the GNML standings.

Rayside-Balfour Sabrecats

The Sabrecats won one and lost one last weekend. The Sabrecats were beat by Timmins on Oct.1, 8-6, but rebounded by dumping Kapuskasing 5-1 on Oct. 2. With the results, the Sabrecats sit fourth in the GNML with a record of 4-3.

Here's the Sabrecats top-three scorers: Mike Mascioli and Chad Mallette have five goals and eight points in seven games each, while Jeff Verreault has four goals and eight points in seven games.

Goalie report: Al Valiquette has played four games, allowing only six goals and has a sharp 1.98 GAA. Joshua Taibossigai has also played four games, allowing 21 goals and has a 5.29 GAA.

The Sabrecats were on the ice again this weekend when they travelled to North Bay to play the Trappers yesterday. The Sabrecats are hosting New Liskeard at the Chelmsford Arena today at 1:30 pm.

Valley East Cobras

The Cobras played one game last weekend, losing 8-3 to North Bay. The Cobras are struggling with a 1-5 record that places them in eighth spot in the GNML standings.

Here's the Cobras top-three scorers: Garrett Hamel has two goals and seven points in six games, Justin Hogan has one goal and six points in six games, while Scott Faulkner has three goals and five points in six games.

Goalie report: Shawn Sirman has played three games, allowing eight goals and has a 2.68 GAA. Tyler Beskorowany has also played three games, allowing 21 goals and features a 7.00 GAA.

The Cobras didn't play any games this weekend.
