Wrestlers turn in best-ever performance

They lost their ride and money, but they never lost their fighting spirit. Because of this dogged determination and drive, 18 local wrestlers put on the best performance of their lives.

They lost their ride and money, but they never lost their fighting spirit. Because of this dogged determination and drive, 18 local wrestlers put on the best performance of their lives.

Four weeks ago, the members of the Sudbury Wrestling Club believed their hopes for national glory had disappeared when the airline company where
they booked their flights, Jetsgo, went bankrupt.

It all happened only weeks before the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Championships in Newfoundland.

The large contingent of wrestlers were left in limbo. It was especially heartbreaking because they had all been saving up their own money for the trip.
Many wrestlers worked part time jobs to get the money needed to go.

The wrestlers hit the pavement to sell chocolate bars at one point, some businesses made contributions, parents helped out and the team managed to raise enough money to make up the lost funds.

The team booked another flight on Canjet, and made their way to the championships with vengeance on their minds.

Sudbury marched away from the event with three gold medals, three bronze medals, a team bronze and numerous top 10 finishes.
