Original story:

Plunging and rising temperatures so far this winter are delaying the opening of the city's ski hills, Lively and Adanac.

City communications officer Kelli Sheppard said Thursday they're optimistic they will open within the next few days, provided it's cold enough for the snow-making machines to operate.

“We've had a lot of natural snow which is great,” Sheppard said. “We've had some cold weather, but we haven't had enough cold weather (so) we haven't been able to make a lot of snow with our machines. It has to be a consistent -10 at Adanac and -15 at the Lively Ski Hill in order for those machines to be able to produce snow.”

Uncooperative weather has meant the hills have opened at different times in recent years, ranging from Jan. 13 in 2007 to Dec. 18 in 2009.

Typically, the hills open in late December or early January, with the skiing season wrapping up sometime in March. For more information on fees and operating hours, visit this website.
