Updated at 5 p.m.: Greater Sudbury Police are now saying upon further investigation of the child struck by a car on Regional Road 15 this afternoon, the child was not actually on the school bus, but was walking along the side of the road when he was struck by a vehicle.

The driver of the school bus was a witness who stopped at the accident scene.

Original story: Greater Sudbury Police have closed Regional Road 15 to all traffic, between Montée Principale and Methe Street after an 11-year-old child was struck by a vehicle after exiting a school bus, police said.

Police said in a press release, sent out after 4 p.m., they could not report on the extent of the child's injuries at that time.

Police have asked commuters to take an alternate route Tuesday evening, as the road could be closed for a few hours.

A driver that passes a school bus while it is stopped with its red lights flashing in Ontario can face a fine of $400 to $2,000 for the first offence, and six demerit points.

Subsequent offences come with fines of $1,000 to $4,000, six demerit points, and possible jail time.
