A repeat drug trafficker was given the equivalent of a one-year jail term Wednesday.

Court heard Edward Greco, 22, was caught by police selling a $20 bag of marijuana downtown.

On Sept. 8, a drug search warrant was executed at Greco?s residenc and inside police found 1.2 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of $5,600 and other drug paraphenalia.

Greco was arrested and has remained in custody at the Sudbury District Jail since.

Defence counsel Donald Plaunt said Greco is involved in a solid long-term relationship and recently became a father and knows he?s going to have to find a better way to make a living than selling drugs.

Greco does have a long criminal record, but these are his first drug offences, said Plaunt.

Justice William Fitzgerald agreed the appropriate sentence would be an additional six months in jail on top of three months Greco has already served in pre-trial custody.

The courts traditionally award two days for every day of time served in pre-trial detention, meaning Greco?s total sentence is the equivalent of 12 months.
