Potential gas leak forces crowds to downtown streets

The City of Greater Sudbury has sent out an alert to notify the public that the gas leak emergency at Rainbow Centre mall has ended.

There is no longer a concern for public safety.

GSPS are advising that all roadways have been reopened except Ste. Anne Road after a potential gas leak near the Rainbow Centre mall this afternoon.

The police will provide an update when the road has been reopened.

The Rainbow Centre mall has been evacuated due to a potential gas leak.

Shortly after 12 p.m. this afternoon, Greater Sudbury Police Services were called to assist Greater Sudbury Fire Services in regards to a possible gas leak at the mall.

Police are asking for pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area for the time being.

Gas has been shut off. Fire services will remain on site to ensure public safety and eople will be allowed back into the mall soon.

Greater Sudbury Police say there's a suspected gas leak at the Rainbow Mall in downtown Sudbury.

Sudbury.com reporter Matt Durnan is on scene, and says westbound traffic on Elm Street is closed off from Paris to Durham streets, while eastbound traffic on the roadway is being allowed through. Paris Street and Notre Dame Avenue remain open.

There are crowds of people outside the mall.

Emergency services, along with Union Gas, are on scene in the Rainbow Mall area, according to a tweet issued at around 12:15 p.m. Tuesday by Greater Sudbury Police.

Please avoid the area, say police.
