Young man drowns following boating accident

The body of a 20-year-old Sudbury man was pulled from the water July 1 after a boating accident on Geneva Lake.

On Sunday, around 5:45 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police received a 9-1-1 call advising that a male had gone out on the lake in a 14-foot aluminum boat using a 15 horsepower motor. Approximately five minutes after his departure, the boat was observed going around in circles with no one on board.

With the assistance of neighbouring cottagers, friends of the victim organized a search, but were unsuccessful in their attempt to locate the man.

Members of the Sudbury OPP Detachment Marine unit were dispatched to the scene and commenced a search. They were assisted by the OPP helicopter and the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU).  The body of the 20-year-old male from Sudbury, Ontario was recovered by members of the USRU on July 1.

At the request of the family, the victim’s name is not being released.
