Wolves jump out to series lead with 5-2 win over Steelheads
Playing at home in front of nearly 5,000 fans, the Sudbury Wolves grabbed the early advantage in their first round playoff series Friday night, downing the Mississauga Steelheads 5-2. Scoring for the Wolves in game one of the OHL playoffs were Nolan Hutcheson, Shane Bulitka and Blake Murray. Final shots on goal were 32-31 in favour of Sudbury. Wolves claim game two in overtime
Still flying from their 5-2 victory against the Mississauga Steelheads on Friday, the Sudbury Wolves welcomed their division rivals back to the Sudbury Arena last night, for Game Two of their first round playoff series. Nearly matched in performance, this exciting face-off had a nail-bitting finish, with David Levin slamming home the game winner in overtime to secure a 3-2 final for Sudbury. Another impressive performance by Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen kept the Steelheads at bay, with final shots on goal 41-29 in favour of Mississauga. Read the full game report here.

Powwow photos: Cambrian Indigenous students celebrate tradition, community and change
Drawn by the beat of the ceremonial drums and the chimes of its jingle-dancers, crowds gathered at Cambrian College this past Friday and Saturday, for the school's 2019 Pow Wow - Empowering Dreams of Success. The two-day event welcomed more than 100 dancers to the Cambrian gymnasium, showcasing their talents according to style, age and gender. In addition to providing an opportunity for the community to connect with one-another, powwows are important lessons in the roots, traditions and ceremonies of the Indigenous people, said elder Jim Eshkawkogam. (A Kid) in the Hall and Women Fully Clothed: LOL Sudbury headliners on comedy and life
The 2019 edition of the Laugh Out Loud (LOL) Sudbury Comedy Festival, which runs March 28-30, features veterans on the Canadian comedy scene. That includes Kids in the Hall's Bruce McCulloch, who brings his new one man show “Tales of Bravery and Stupidity” to Fraser Auditorium March 28. On March 30, comedy super group Women Fully Clothed are back in town with their new show Invisible. Made up of Robin Duke, Jayne Eastwood, Kathryn Greenwood and Teresa Pavlinek, this show digs right in and mines the hilarity of their new stage of life through comedy and song. Sudbury Sec raising funds for breast cancer detection equipment
Sudbury Secondary School will host a fundraising gala in support of purchasing cancer detection equipment for the Northeast Cancer Centre March 29 in the lower hall of the Caruso Club in Sudbury. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner starts at 6:30 pm. “This event will be filled with positivity and hope,” said Heather Downey, Principal of Sudbury Secondary School, in a press release. “Everyone is welcome to join us as we gather together to support a cause that has touched so many lives.” Read the full story here.
'Nobody wins in this:' Truck driver in fatal Broncos crash gets 8-year sentence
A truck driver who caused the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison by a judge who said she believed his remorse was sincere, but she had to consider the serious consequences for so many people. Tears began to flow almost as soon as Judge Inez Cardinal began her decision and continued afterwards as families sombrely gathered outside court. Jaskirat Singh Sidhu of Calgary had pleaded guilty in January to 29 counts of dangerous driving for killing 16 people and injuring 13 others on the junior hockey team's bus. Read the full story here.
Cambrian celebrates its star athletes at awards banquet
Cambrian College honoured its best athletes this week at its annual Varsity Athletics Banquet. Men’s soccer team player Richard John was named Cambrian’s Male Athlete of the Year, while volleyball player Isabelle Rivest was named Female Athlete of the Year. A fourth-year player, John has played the most-ever games for the men’s soccer squad. This past season, he scored three goals, and was selected as both an Ontario College Athletic Association and Canadian College Athletic Association Athlete of the Week. He was also named team MVP. Local "AAA" hockey stars lead Horizon Aigles to their first OFSAA
The only thing better than closing out your competitive hockey career with friends, is closing it out with friends at a provincial championship.
And that is exactly what the likes of Eric Bourassa and Bryce Brunet were doing this week. Very familiar names to anyone who has followed "AAA" hockey in Sudbury over the course of the past decade or so, Brunet and Bourassa have joined forces with their schoolmates this year, leading the Horizon Aigles to their first ever OFSAA boys hockey appearance. Letter: Terrorism has no religion or race
I have been a resident of beautiful Sudbury for many years, but what makes me stand out is that piece of cloth I choose to wear on my head called a hijab. The hijab sends out a stark message that I am of the Muslim faith. The hijab also makes me feel like hiding under a rock, especially when someone claiming to be of my faith perpetrates a heinous crime against humanity. Read the full submission here.
