A Greater Sudbury police officer was sent to hospital Sunday after being struck by a car stolen by a Newmarket man wanted on a murder charge.

The officer was treated at St. Joseph?s Health Centre and released.

According to Staff. Sgt. David Linney, the car in question was reported stolen from the Lasalle/Notre Dame area at 10:17 pm Sunday. It was left running.
Two officers saw the vehicle a short time later westbound on Highway 17.

The officers followed the vehicle until a marked cruiser and an OPP cruiser arrived, then performed a ?safe pull-over.?

Once stopped, the driver, 18, reversed, rammed the OPP cruiser, shifted it into drive and pinned the Sudbury officer against the other cruiser.

The driver faces charges of theft and possession over $5,000, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and resisting arrest.

His passenger is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000.

For a charge of assault to be warranted, the intent to hurt the officer would have to be established, according to Linney.

Police believe he was just trying to get away.

The driver is facing a murder charge that stems from the stabbing death of a 19-year old outside a Tim Hortons in Newmarket.

York Regional police were to return the driver to their jurisdiction to face that charge.
