Human Skull Found in the Valley
The Greater Sudbury Police Service is in the process of conducting a search near the Hanmer area, following the discovery of human remains Saturday evening. GSPS Staff Sgt. Daryl Adams said that around 6 p.m. on May 25, police received a call that two members of the public had discovered what appeared to be a human skull in the area of Nelson Lake Road, west of Demarais Road. At this point in time, there is no estimate as to the age, gender or identity of the individual, or a suspected cause of death. Read the full story here.
Flood Warning extended for Sudbury and Parry Sound districts
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) has extended their Flood Warning for Sudbury and Parry Sound Districts until May 31. Areas at risk of flooding, are the West Arm area of Lake Nipissing, French River and Lower Pickerel River Watersheds; including the Municipality of St. Charles, Municipality of French River, Municipality of Killarney, McConkey Township, Blair Township, Mowat Township, and Henvey Inlet First Nation. Tim Hortons’ guest deploys pepper spray, temporarily halting service
Greater Sudbury Police responded to the call around 9 a.m. Saturday morning, taking the suspects into custody for further investigation. A number of patrons were treated by EMS as a result of the incident, said GSPS through their twitter account. An eye-witness who did not want to be identified said that it was a minor incident, resulting in no damage to the business or injury to its staff.
Defeat Depression Walk raises more than $20,000 for NISA
This morning a crowd of supporters, umbrellas in hand, marched from the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre for Sudbury's sixth annual Defeat Depression Walk, raising more than $20,000 for the Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA). Defeat Depression is a national fundraising and awareness campaign that supports mental health programs across the country through the Mood Disorder Society of Canada, and locally through the beneficiary of that particular community. This year, Sudbury hosted the event in support of NISA, a peer-run, mental health organization where clients receive occupational training, grow self-confidence, and find resources for recovery. Spartans claim victory in their Northern Football Conference season opener
The Sudbury Spartans broke into the regular season with a 35-26 win over the Oakville Longhorns Saturday night, kicking off what looks to be an impressive year from the boys in blue and silver. “We expect this will be a very exciting and entertaining year as we have lots of amazing young talent on the roster and are looking forward to what the new season brings.” Spartans play their next game in Sudbury June 1 at 7 p.m., against the North Bay Bulldogs. Sudbury OPP locate stolen ATV and ORV with “suspicious driver”
On May 22, Sudbury OPP Warren Detachment responded to complaints of an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) “suspiciously” traveling up and down the back roads in the Municipality of St. Charles. Police say they were in the process of investigating an abandoned ATV at the scene, when a Side by Side Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) and a second ATV approached the officer’s location. The driver of the ATV surrendered to police, while the riders of the ORV chose to flee to a nearby wooded area. Further investigation revealed that the two ATVs, the ORV, as well as other items within the vehicles, had been stolen from three nearby residences. Read the full story here.
Quinton Byfield wins Wawanesa Rookie of the Year
Sudbury Wolves centre Quinton Byfield has won the Wawanesa Rookie of the Year Award, the top honour for first-year players in the Canadian Hockey League. The award caps an impressive regular season and post-season performance by the 16-year-old athlete from Newmarket. Maintaining a nearly point-per-game pace, Byfield delivered 29 goals and 32 assists across 64 appearances in the regular season, placing him third in scoring among OHL freshman. Sudbury athletes leap into day two of the track and field championships
In the eyes of Macdonald-Cartier Panthères senior Ariane Saumure, the finish line is/was directly in sight, both literally and figuratively. A multi-sport athlete, who was also a member of the city champion girls basketball team which went on to claim bronze at OFSAA, Saumure will head off to join the Western University Mustangs in the fall, not wavering in the least, despite the recent dismissal of long-time Western basketball coach Brian Cheng. Sofina Foods Inc. is recalling Compliments brand Chicken Strips from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination. This product was identified as a source of illness through the Public Health Agency of Canada's investigation into the Salmonella outbreak. Three road projects to begin May 27
The City of Greater Sudbury would like to advise motorists that there will be three road work projects beginning May 27, that may affect traffic until the beginning of July. Vermillion Lake Road in Chelmsford will undergo ditching and resurfacing from May 27 to July. Curb and Sidewalk repair to Leslie Street will take place from May 27 to May 31. Lastly, from May 27 to July 5, the Kingsway from Mazda to Pioneer Gas Bar will undergo a curb and sidewalk removal and replacement. Find the full details here.
