Forest fire sparks a two-hour evacuation notice for Gogama
On Saturday around 8 p.m., the Ministry of Forestry issued a two-hour voluntary notice of evacuation for the Municipality of Gogama, which remains in effect. Timmins 2, a forest fire located approximately 4 km west of the Gogama, now covers 800 hectares and appears to be spreading north. Smoke from the nearby fire has caused consistently low visibility on Hwy 144, leading to frequent closures between Hwy 560 and Hwy 661. Read the full story here.
Five new forest fires discovered in the Northeast Region, three in Sudbury
There were five new fires discovered in the Northeast Region reported Saturday evening, three of which are located within Greater Sudbury area. The first, Sudbury 5, is located by a rail corridor near Ruby Lake approximately 11 km west of Alban, and is being held at 0.6 hectares. Sudbury four is near the western shore of Lake Wanapitei, around 6.5 km east of Capreol, and is being held at 0.1 hectares. The third fire was found approximately 13 km north of Capreol, but was suppressed overnight. There are currently 13 active fires in the Northeast Region, including Timmins 2, an active forest fire burning on the west side of Hwy 144 which resulted in a voluntary evacuation order for Gogama. Flood warning extended for Sudbury and Parry Sound Districts
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has extended their Flood Warning for Sudbury and Parry Sound Districts until Friday, June 14.Lake Nipissing water levels are currently 0.15 m above the maximum 'non-damage' water level of 196.22, said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry in a press release. Although inflows into the lake have decreased, the ministry said the lake is still highly vulnerable to rainfall events, such as the 20-33 mm of precipitation expected from Monday into Tuesday. Man says Sudbury landlords sharing tenant blacklist 200 names long in Facebook group
A man who says he was invited to be part of a closed Facebook group for local landlords says it's wrong the group is keeping a blacklist of tenants to avoid. Matthew Hahnimaki provided the list to Sudbury.com, as well as screenshots of a discussion in which a landlord advises other property owners to keep the blacklist "on the down low" because it is illegal. The group, Sudbury Landlords, has 209 members as of June 6, and a list of tenants 218 names long who have been identified as being problematic. Read the full story here.
Hundreds gather to celebrate the life of pastor Jeremy Mahood
More than 700 members of his congregation and the Greater Sudbury community gathered together this afternoon at All Nations Church, to pay tribute to the husband, father, friend and pastor, Jeremy Mahood. For all that it was a sombre occasion, filled with tears over time lost and memories shared, the afternoon had an unmistakable underlining of faith - both spiritually and in the strength of the community Mahood left behind. Mahood, 69, passed away suddenly June 4. Read the full story
City updates zoning rules to include cannabis sales, production
With cannabis now legal in Canada, Greater Sudbury's planning committee is looking at updating the zoning and other rules governing growing the now legal weed. A report headed to the June 10 meeting says under planning rules, marijuana is now considered an agricultural use, something the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario aims to promote. After two placements, we're finally bidding farewell to Intern Annie
My journey with Sudbury.com started in the summer of 2018 when I was choosing a placement for my summer co-op. A lot was riding on this placement because it would be the deciding factor on what my future would hold. I had wanted to be a photojournalist for so long. What if it wasn't all I had hoped it would be? What if I ended up hating working in the media? All of my plans would be thrown out the window and I would have to start anew. Results of the 2019 OFSAA Track and Field Championships
At the risk of stating the obvious, Lauren Fearn has been the story, from a SDSSAA perspective, at the 2019 OFSAA Track and Field Championships in Guelph. Earlier today, the multi-sport grade ten athlete at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School picked up her third medal of the meet, garnering silver in the junior girls javelin event with yet another personal best performance. Sure, some teams cruise their way through to an appearance in a provincial final. That, however, was nowhere near the case for the Sudbury Jam U14 Boys, as coach Greg Sandblom and company battled a little bit of everything before settling for silver at the 2019 Ontario Cup Championships. Let's get geeky! Graphic-Con 2019 was all kinds of super fun
Graphic-Con 2019 drew heroes, villains and mere mortals alike to downtown Sudbury yesterday. The annual event has achieved considerable growth over the years, attracting cosplayers, vendors and fans from across the Nickle city and beyond. Amanda Harte, president of the Graphic-Con board of directors, told Sudbury.com the growth is a byproduct of the event's remarkable variety, which features "everything from horror, sci-fi, fantasy, video games, anime, comic books" and more.
