BY BILL BRADLEY The recent fire at the 61-year-old Steelworkers Union Hall on Frood Road is suspicious in nature, said police Monday morning at police headquarters.

The Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is continuing the about five kilometres south of White River on Highway 17. Around 4:15 p.m., police were told a passenger had been assaulted by another passenger on board a westbound bus.

During the day on Friday, officers responded to several theft complaints all with a common theme. A shotgun, a chainsaw and a laptop computer were all stolen from motor vehicles.

Students from Lansdowne Public School and Sudbury Secondary School have been relocated as a result of the fire at the Steelworkers Hall. Students from Lansdowne Public School are being bused to Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School.

A young man was taken into police custody Thursday after being caught in the process of preparing “a narcotic cigarette,” as a press release described it.

UPDATED: Some people living in homes along College Street neighbouring the Steelworkers Hall have been evacuated because of smoke in the air. The fire appeared to be contained this morning, but later started up again.

An intoxicated man was arrested at the emergency department at Sudbury Regional Hospital during the evening of Sept. 17 after yelling at staff.

A driver who was stopped for speeding was issued more than a ticket for his heavy foot Sept. 17. Sudbury OPP officers stopped the northbound vehicle on Highway 69 in Burwash Township.

UPDATE: The Greater Sudbury Police Service have charged Patrick Bibeau, 20, of Sudbury, with first-degree murder in the death of Brian Burns. Bibeau is scheduled to appear in Bail Court.
